Microincision Vitrectomy Surgery (MIVS)
Micro-incision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) is undoubtedly one of the most impressive evolutions in Vitreo-Retinal surgery
since the modern vitrectomy was developed in the early 1970s. MIVS is defined as a combination of 25- or 23-gauge instrumentation and a transconjunctival sutureless procedure.
Since its introduction a decade ago, Micro-incision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) has gained widespread use and popularity due to a number of advantages, both for the patient and surgeon. The patient gains through faster healing and greater postoperative comfort, and the surgeon benefits from greater operating room efficiency. Since its introduction, there have been further refinements to MIVS technology, as well as to surgical technique.
MIVS, is similar to the trend toward minimally invasive intervention in phacoemulsification for cataract surgery, but involves smaller incisions in vitrectomy for vitreo-retinal surgeries without peritomy (opening up of the conjunctiva) and suturing (sutureless – key hole). This has facilitated early and better visual recovery, diminish ocular surface irregularities, and decrease patient discomfort, operating time, postoperative inflammation, and surgically induced astigmatism. Therefore, MIVS is also known as “minimally-invasive” vitrectomy surgery.
